Transflow Chip

The Physiochip family comprises several microfluidic based culture chambers which aim to create cell and tissue culture environments that resemble the in-vivo conditions.

Transflow Chip

The TransFlow Chip results from the integration of flow microenvironments with traditional transwell models. The combination of a permeable support with the possibility of establishing flows and automatically replacing culture media at the user's discretion at both of its sides represents an invaluable tool to produce physiologically relevant cell culture environments. Live microscopy imaging of cell behavior is straight forward thanks to its optical grade bottom.

Permeable supports and flow

The use of permeable supports in vitro opens the door to the study of cellular functions such as transport, absorption and secretion and allows cells to be grown in a polarized state, better representing their in vivo counterparts. Besides, many physiological environments involve flow and shear stress mechanical stimulation. Exactly for these reasons, the TransFlow Chip results from the integration of flow microenvironments with permeable supports, overcoming the limitations of traditional transwell models and significantly increasing their range of applications.

How it works

The chip consists of an upper and a lower flow chamber, separated by a horizontal microporous membrane. Both chambers are available for cell culture, can be filled with media or gel matrices and have independent inlets and outlets. The combination of a permeable support with the possibility of establishing flows and automatically replacing culture media at the user's discretion at both of its sides represents an invaluable tool to produce physiologically relevant cell culture environments. The TransFlow Chip is compatible with most commercial peristaltic and syringe pumps.

Advantages over traditional transwell chamber models

Prolonged studies are difficult with traditional transwell chambers, since the concentration quickly equalizes between both compartments. Physiologic flow conditions cannot be reproduced either. Instead, the TransFlow Chip allows to perform a large variety of cell biology experiments during long culture periods: transport, absorption, secretion, invasion, transmigration and chemotaxis assays, culture of polarized cells, etc.
